DWA provided project management, planning, detailed design, drawing production, and contract administration support (with our partners, MMC Architects) to Oxford Properties for the completion of this major renovation to Hillcrest Mall in Richmond Hill. In backfilling the vacated Hudson’s Bay store, this was the first major step in the repositioning of the mall. The project goal was to improve the highly visible south end of the site and to create a new, high-profile structural glass entrance, which acts as a landmark for vehicles approaching on the east-west corridor of 16th Avenue. The new mall spaces feature blended artificial (LED) and natural lighting, balanced with generous skylights and high-quality, bright interior finishes. The renovation involved the removal of all exterior building components, stripping all the way back to the structural steel frame, the redesign of the exterior storefronts, the addition of new snow roofs and skylights, an improved loading dock, and exterior public realm. The retail areas were also prepared for occupancy as part of the project, and the MMC/DWA team worked closely with both landlord and tenants to coordinate technical requirements and design considerations. The team also led the Site Plan process which included the execution of a full new agreement (SPA) and obtaining significant variances. This successful project was completed by PCL Construction in 2016.
